TIRANA (Reuters) - Albanian prosecutors have charged former Prime Minister Sali Berisha and his son-in-law on corruption charges over a land deal involving the grounds of a sports club, investigators said on Sunday. While his son-in-law was arrested late on Saturday, Berisha himself is a lawmaker and has immunity from prosecution. Berisha has accused current Prime Minister Edi Rama of orchestrating the whole case. The accusations are baseless and are Edi Rama's direct political attacks against me," Berisha told reporters late on Saturday. Berisha served as president from 1992 to 1997, immediately after the fall of communism in Albania, and as prime minister from 2005 to 2013.

[1/5] People take part in the Albanian opposition anti-government protest in Tirana, Albania, February 11, 2023. Protesters, led by opposition leader Sali Berisha, hurled firecrackers at the entrance of government offices where hundreds of police officers in anti-riot gear blocked protesters from entering the building. Berisha, a former president and prime minister, is banned from entering the United States over alleged corruption. During the protest Berisha accused Prime Minister Rama of corrupting U.S. officials to lobby against him and against opposition parties. Rama, who is in his third term as prime minister, has denied all accusations of corruption.

A group of men in Albania who were filmed carrying a dinghy at an anti-government protest have been falsely accused of staging the stunt in London to mock Britain. The clip shows six men carrying a black dinghy flying both the Albanian and British flags. But the video was captured during an anti-government protest in Tirana, Albania, on Nov. 12, and it shows the men carrying the dinghy to the front of the office of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Video and images captured by local news outlets show the same event with the same men from a different angle (here and here). The video was captured in Albania and shows people protesting corruption, rising poverty and a growing number of people leaving the country.

After demonstrating peacefully for around three hours, protesters broke through the police cordon around the government building and threw red and black paint. The protest is seen in Albania as an attempt by Berisha to flex his muscles before local elections in May 2023. Berisha, who has previously served both as president and prime minister, was barred in 2021 from entering the United States over alleged corruption.
